map illustration for novel

portfolio item type(s)
Book map illustration
problem
Produce a monochrome map showing a journey taken by characters in a novel set in prehistoric eastern Europe and Asia Minor.
solution
I developed this using an atlas map as a reference, labeling map features deemed significant by the author with their names from the novel. I strove for a line quality that felt appropriate to the subject matter.
note
This is one of a series of map illustrations I created using Adobe Illustrator for a novel series by Mary Mackey.

t-shirt silk-screen

portfolio item type(s)
Silkscreened illustration
problem

Create a memorable T-shirt produced via silk-screen printing in a small run of only a few dozen. The piece was to commemorate a group trip taken to the Black Sea to view a total solar eclipse, taking a cruise offered for that purpose on the ship Stella Solaris.

solution

For this, the front of the T-shirt, I wanted to capture and convey the very moment of viewing the eclipse; what the trip was all about (aside from the camaraderie, of course). I developed the diamond ring images that appear to be reflected in the pupils from a photo taken of that eclipse. I reduced the photo to something that could be printed using only black and white inks. The group members, some of whom had been on numerous eclipse trips and encountered many other eclipse fans, were very happy with the T-shirts and said they'd never come across anything like this design among many such T-shirts they'd seen.

note
The concept and design is 100% my own. I used Corel Draw to develop the graphic.

popup event invitation card

portfolio item type(s)
Mervyn's Wave popup card
problem
Develop a memorable invitation piece and related materials for a major in-house corporate event, driving the event theme of "make waves".
solution
I developed this wave illustration in vector format so that it could be used for both large banners and small pieces like this die-cut pop-up card, and also created simplified versions for monochrome spot-color pieces such as rubber swim caps. I created the image using both Corel Draw and Adobe Illustrator, and did the layout for this piece in Quark XPress.

splash-style home page

portfolio item type(s)
splash-style home page
problem
Develop a splash-screen style home page layout for a B2B services corporation, conveying a theme of monetary growth. The company offers services such as methodologies for very granular metrics development and modeling relevant to a corporation's business processes, to enable quantitative feedback on the effects of changes to those business processes.
solution
I designed the logo based on the idea of quarter-to-quarter growth in a cyclical fashion, with markers along the way to measure that growth. The "arrow graph" is intended to convey the simple idea of monetary growth, with the gridwork below meant to suggest precision. I conceived and produced all graphics in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and produced the HTML code.
